The purpose of this chapter is to help you understand nursing’s scientific base—the science of nursing—and the links between nursing practice, research, and science. Many of you who are studying this chapter are working toward completion of a bachelor”s degree of science in nursing (BSN); each of you are using nursing science to shape your practice.

Recently, an unusually intense series of storm cells has affected the education of nurses and the practice of nursing. In 2005, the American Organization of Nurse Executives (AONE) released a statement calling for all registered nurses to be prepared at the baccalaureate level in an effort to educate nurses at a level commensurate with their challenging and complex clinical roles.

As we pause to celebrate the WIN legacy of nursing practice, research, and education, we should contemplate where and how we should take our profession and our science for the future. WIN can lead our region in advancing nursing practice, education, and research to create a preferred future and improve health and healthcare for the 21st century.
