Year Around. Winter. The Common Redpoll (Greenland) is a race or sub-species of the Common Redpoll. It is sometimes referred to the Common Redpoll (large-billed). This redpoll has a darker plumage and is the larger of the two.

rostrata (Greenland redpoll) Lesser redpoll (Acanthis cabaret) Arctic redpoll. The Arctic redpoll is the one that causes the least confusion because of it much paler than its two cousins. The most widely held view recognises two species, the common redpoll (including flammea, islandica, rostrata and cabaret) and the arctic redpoll (including hornemanni and exilipes).

Three rostrata “Greater” redpolls are fairly obvious here (blue arrows), being larger and darker than the birds around them. And several others are possibly “Greater” but not quite dark enough or large enough to be identified confidently.

Dependent from posture and the condition of the individual. Highly variable character within and amongst the different (sub)species. Broad (yellowish) brown band running from sides of breast to rear flank, quite diffusely bordered on a whitish undertone. Always heavily streaked dark, even down to the rear flanks.

This race is larger than nominate, with larger bill and longer wings.
